Biblioteca Angelica

La Biblioteca Angelica è una delle 46 biblioteche pubbliche statali (Ministero dei beni e delle attività culturali e del turismo). Prende il nome dal vescovo agostiniano Angelo Rocca (1546-1620), scrittore erudito e appassionato collezionista di edizioni pregiate, responsabile della Tipografia Vaticana durante il pontificato di Sisto V. Negli ultimi anni del XVI secolo Angelo Rocca affidò la sua raccolta libraria (20.000 volumi circa) ai frati del convento di Sant'Agostino di Roma, stabilendo che la biblioteca del convento fosse aperta a tutti senza limiti di stato e di censo: nasce nel 1604 la prima biblioteca aperta al pubblico in Europa.
