Job Description

Reporting to the Director of Marketing, the Assistant Director of Marketing and Media Strategy is responsible for developing and executing omnichannel marketing strategies that increase Museum visitation, ticket sales, memberships and other earned revenue streams. The Assistant Director is also responsible for designing and implementing media plans that effectively reach target audiences and strengthen the Museum’s brand through digital and traditional channels.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute marketing strategies and tactics, in the form of multi-year, annual and seasonal integrated marketing plans, with the goals of increasing visitation and related revenues, while supporting audience development goals museum-wide;
  • Work with Marketing and Communications department colleagues, internal stakeholders and third-party agencies to develop 360-degree marketing plans, including creative strategy and messaging, media planning and placement, and the development of other marketing assets on an ongoing basis, to meet strategic objectives;
  • Write integrated marketing briefs for internal and agency use;
  • Develop and maintain dynamic audiences framework; set audience-specific goals for each marketing effort and ensure marketing strategies and media plans best support intended outcomes;
  • Coordinate efforts across paid/owned/earned channels in development,  maintenance and implementation of single integrated marketing calendar;
  • Ensure paid media plans most effectively allocate spend, leverage owned channels and amplify earned media in support of KPIs;
  • Oversee institutional email marketing strategy that addresses business and communications objectives;
  • Develop paid search strategies (including Google AdWords), ensuring alignment with the Museum’s SEO efforts;
  • Identify promotional partnerships and visibility opportunities with corporate, media and community partners that support marketing plans;
  • Continually leverage key insights from audience research to develop and refine integrated marketing strategies;
  • In collaboration with Marketing colleagues, oversee development, production and trafficking of all online, print and outdoor advertising creative with external agencies and in-house Graphic Design department;
  • Help manage Marketing department budget, working with Finance team
  • Supervise Manager of Digital Marketing; indirectly supervise Coordinator of Marketing

General

  • Stay current with leading digital marketing and social media trends;
  • Continually evaluate the Whitney’s marketing mix against new and proven channels;
  • Help analyze and report on marketing return on investment; and
  • Promote a culture that is consistent with the Whitney’s values of innovation, risk-taking and responsiveness, and the highest standards of artistic and programmatic excellence.

Qualifications

  • BA or BS required
  • 5-7 years of omnichannel marketing experience, including expertise across digital and social platforms; 2-3 years of experience with marketing strategy and/or media planning in an internal role or at an agency is a plus;
  • Proven success in developing and implementing digital marketing and social media campaigns that generate demand and drive sales;
  • Strong analytical skills and facility with interpreting market research, channel analytics, and campaign results;
  • Demonstrated ability to excel in both creative and goal-oriented, KPI-driven environments;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to manage complex, concurrent projects and meet deadlines;
  • Strong supervisory skills and experience managing direct deports, as well as project teams;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite;
  • Intellectual curiosity and a desire to be part of today’s most relevant conversations is a must;
  • Prior museum and/or art experience is not required.
