Job Description

The Metropolitan Museum of Art connects the world to 5,000 years of art and culture in its galleries and online. On any given day, incredible stories unfold across our four spaces: The Met Fifth Avenue, The Met Breuer, The Met Cloisters, and online. We are looking for a highly motivated and well-organized Associate Editor to acquire, edit, proofread, and publish content for the Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History and related metmuseum.org features. S/he ensures accuracy and consistency of content. S/he is a mission-driven editor who is passionate about bringing The Met’s collection, scholarship, and stories to new and existing audiences worldwide.

S/he works closely with departments and authors across the Museum to develop and produce high-quality, deeply engaging art-historical resources used by educators, students, and general audiences worldwide. The Associate Editor coordinates the end-to-end content-creation process, from ideation through final publication and distribution. The position reports to the Managing Editor, Digital Content.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

 

  • Create, review, edit, and repurpose content for the Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History, metmuseum.org, and related distribution channels in accordance with editorial schedules and roadmaps

     

  • Scout, solicit, and scope articles from across the institution, and develop them into engaging and substantive features for a global, non-specialist audience

     

  • Ensure consistent style and voice, and copyedit and proofread as necessary

     

  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders to clear rights and permissions and acquire new imaging assets and associated metadata

     

  • Adjust quickly to changing requirements, competing deadlines, and changing processes

     

  • Proactively manage and undertake ownership of assigned projects

     

  • Adept problem-solver that takes initiative to troubleshoot issues, both independently and collaboratively

     

 

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • One to three years editorial experience in a professional digital environment

     

  • Impeccable writing, editing, and proofreading skills

     

  • Meticulous attention to detail, creativity, and flexibility

     

  • Strong interpersonal skills and a capacity to communicate easily and professionally with staff in diverse functional areas and departments

     

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines Demonstrated experience with CMS (Wordpress and Sitecore a plus), HTML, and an interest in learning new applications as needed

     

  • Proficient in Adobe Photoshop

     

  • Ability to take direction and apply feedback

     

 

Knowledge and Education:

 

 

● Bachelor's degree or equivalent

● Knowledge of art history required
