Job Description

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
 
This position supervises the Image Archive Asssistant and three departmental interns per year.
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
 

  • Creates high resolution photographs of 2 and 3-dimensional works of art in the Guggenheim collections for publication and web usage.
  • Implements best practices in lighting, color management and capture protocols for tethered image capture in the studio and on location.
  • Works closely with Conservation department staff to create high quality technical photography of works of art for documentation of restoration and for scientific research.
  • In collaboration with Director of Photographic Services manages the Guggenheim Photography Studio—including photography request scheduling from all museum departments, intern training and quality control for all produced imagery.
  • Manages fine printing operations for Guggenheim Retail operation—annual production and fulfillment for 2500 prints works of art and architectural views for sale in the museum and online stores.
  • Creates product photography for Guggenheim Retail store.
  • Works with Licensing Manager to provide digital imaging services to fulfill requests from publishers and scholars.  This includes photography of art objects and supervision of high resolution digitization and post-production of historic exhibition, event and architectural photographs in the museum’s Image Archive.
  • Photography of exhibition related daytime special events at the museum and on location.
  • Maintains current knowledge of digital photographic equipment, lighting equipment and methods and makes recommendations for keeping hardware and software up to date.

 
 
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
 
 

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience lighting and photographing art objects in a museum or gallery setting.
  • Expert knowledge of medium format, digital slr and mirrorless camera systems and software.
  • Expert knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom CC with advanced ability to evaluate and correct color and density in digital images.
  • Fluency with scanning of negatives, transparencies, and reflective media using Epson and Hasselblad Flextight scanners.
  • Fluency with color management techniques and relevant workflows—including knowledge of Metamorphoze and Fadgi protocols.
  • Fluency with strobe lighting systems, light shaping tools and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of high resolution scanning techniques, archiving and metadata entry protocols and asset management software.
  • Working knowledge of color calibration for fine art inkjet printing.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Excellent organizational and archival skills.
  • B.F.A. or M.F.A. in Photography, Digital Imaging, visual arts or related fields
