Position Description:

The Digital Designer is a member of the Museum’s Design and Interpretation Department, working collaboratively to ensure a consistent and brand-focused visual aesthetic of the Museum’s digital and web-based communications, under the leadership of the Director of Design and Content Strategy and in collaboration with departments across the Museum. Responsibilities of the Digital Designer also include providing design for print and environmental communications as needed, as well as overseeing any/all aspects of production on time and within budget. 

Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Conceptualize and produce design deliverables for a variety of digital platforms and formats, in addition to printed materials. This includes but is not limited to email, the Museum’s web properties and social media platforms, advertising, mobile applications, video, digital publication projects, annual reports, event invitations, magazines, and digital signage and interactives for exhibition and permanent collection installations and the building/campus of the DMA.

• Help develop and maintain the Museum’s brand identity and ensure that visual and graphic standards are adhered to consistently throughout the Museum’s digital products. 

• Maintain design and assist with maintenance of the Museum’s website, microsites, and other web properties in coordination with IT and Digital Media, Marketing and Communications, and other stakeholders.

• Design, code, and deploy email campaigns in coordination with Marketing and Communications and other Museum departments.

• Create digital content for the Museum’s dynamic signage system.

• Prepare and recommend budgets for graphic projects. Estimate and negotiate costs with vendors, and maintain quality control of outside production. 

• Oversee any/all aspects of production for design projects including schedules, routing, and approvals to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget. 

• Works in coordination with the Marketing and Communications department and the Museum’s external agencies to deliver assets for campaigns as needed.

• Work strategically with other Museum departments in defining and achieving their goals and attend meetings as needed to coordinate projects, determine schedules, present information regarding digital and print initiatives, and maintain relationships.

• Promote the Museum’s mission by stewarding the DMA brand by ensuring digital communications are engaging to the community, easy to read, and effective. 

• Advise on and present information on creative guidelines and procedures.

• Keep informed about current and new production methods and media, especially those allowing innovation in design and communication.

• Assist in the protection of the Museum copyright as well as that of the art works and artists.

• Attend departmental and other museum strategic planning meetings as required.

• Other duties, as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, or a combination of a related degree and practical work experience.

• 5+ years of experience in digital and web design. 

• Superior graphic design skills to prepare collateral and effectively visually communicate a brand.

• Experience in web design with proficiency in HTML and CSS required.

• Fluent in Adobe Creative Suite: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, and Acrobat. 

• Experience with Mailchimp and/or other email and marketing automation platforms.

• Experience working with Drupal, WordPress, or other content management systems.

• Experience designing for mobile websites and applications. 

• Knowledge and practical experience with responsive design is required.

• Knowledge of social media tools, trends, and behaviors especially with respect to graphics design and usability.

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with teams.

• Superior organizational planning, budgetary, and project timeline abilities including the ability to plan, develop, monitor, and manage a significant, detailed production schedule of multiple projects simultaneously with flexibility, and a proven ability to stay on schedule and budget.

• Inclination to read, collect information and remain abreast of new and best practices in graphic design, web design, and digital publications.

• Production knowledge and skills and excellent judgment on good typography with color, design, and layout ability; must be able to prepare designs for print or web.

• Experience working in marketing and/or advertising is a plus.

• The intellectual depth, maturity, and collaborative skills necessary to gain the trust and confidence of colleagues, inspiring them to productive collaboration.

• A motivated self-starter with an entrepreneurial drive and creative disposition to generate new ideas and strategies that helps to build a dynamic, comprehensive creative agency.

• Ability to solve problems and prioritize to meet a variety of needs in situations where immediate decisions may be necessary. 

• Ability to work with the public and co-workers professionally and tactfully.

• Ability to meet short- and long-term deadlines and maintain fiscal oversight.

• Extremely detail oriented.

• Understanding of basic UX and UI design principles and best practices preferred.

• Experience with Adobe XD, Sketch, Invision, Moqups, or other wireframing and prototyping tools is a plus.

• Vectorworks, Sketchup, or other computer-aided design (CAD) programs is a plus.
