DIRECTOR OF EXHIBITION DESIGN The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation is seeking a Director of Exhibition Design. The Director of Exhibition Design leads the Department’s work in designing, coordinating, and implementing exhibition design in the museum galleries. Founded in 1937, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation is dedicated to promoting the understanding and appreciation of art, primarily of the modern and contemporary periods, through exhibitions, education programs, research initiatives, and publications. The Guggenheim network that began in the 1970s when the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, was joined by the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice, has since expanded to include the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (opened 1997) and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi (currently in development). Looking to the future, the Guggenheim Foundation continues to forge international collaborations that take contemporary art, architecture, and design beyond the walls of the museum. More information about the foundation can be found at guggenheim.org. Supervisory Responsibilities This position oversees Exhibition Design staff and interns. Key Responsibilities Exhibition Design  Conceive and develop original designs for New York, Affiliate, and Special exhibitions.  Shepherd exhibitions through all phases of design, construction, and installation, maintaining design integrity throughout the process. Assure that design, schedule, and budget plans are met.  Collaborate with SRGM and outside/international curators and artists to refine object checklist and generate appropriate art layout and exhibition armature.  Supervise the generation of CAD drawings and other computer renderings to communicate design concepts.  Manage the making of models, maquettes, prototypes, and mock-ups.  Review design proposals with Artistic Director, Creative Director, Visitor Services, Safety & Security, Facilities, and Special Events to ensure exhibitions meet visitor, building, and event needs.  Collaborate with in-house and outside graphic designers to integrate label, text, title, and directional signage with overall exhibition design.  Interface with Lighting Design to achieve well-integrated environment.  Research, specify, and vet construction and finish materials to secure Conservation approval.  Collaborate with Curatorial, Registrar, Conservation, Exhibition Services, Facilities and Art Services and Preparation, and Multi-Media to plan the safe and effective installation of art.  Solicit bids and material pricing and manage invoicing for special projects and finishes.  Prepare exhibition budget projections, spreadsheets, and cost analysis reports.  Support Exhibition Management staff in monitoring budget, revising design scope, and developing design and production schedules.  Produce presentation materials for senior staff, lender, and sponsor pitches.  Oversee production activities leading up to and during course of installation to ensure quality and fidelity to design.  Liaise with Exhibition Management, Director of Exhibition Services, Manager of Construction, Manager of Exhibition Fabrication, and crew leaders for on-site problem solving and workflow.  Interface with Museum staff to manage work of outside consultants and contractors.  Advise and assist outside parties in understanding the particularities of the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed building and developing successful installations/events that adhere to museum standards. Management  Hire, develop, and supervise Exhibition Design staff and maintain work environment that fosters the highest levels of creativity, productivity, and collaboration. Ensure all designs meet established museum quality standards.  Manage department workflow and assign staff to exhibitions best-suited to their skills.  Provide annual performance appraisals.  Project and manage department budget, payroll, and FTEs.  Advise senior staff on how to reach budget goals via programming decisions.  Assess short and long term architectural measures for improving Museum functionality. Generate and/or review master planning and design proposals, applying knowledge of Museum functions to advocate appropriate course of action.  Advise senior staff on current and prospective architectural projects.  Consult with Facilities and Conservation on Museum-wide projects ranging from custom non-exhibition furniture to coordination and design of new Museum facilities.  Provide aesthetic consultation in keeping with Museum’s standards.  Other duties, as assigned. Qualifications and Requirements  Ten years’ experience in all phases of design and construction as exhibition designer or architect, with minimum five years’ experience as exhibition designer.  Demonstrated interest/familiarity with modern and contemporary art required.  Ability to collaborate with diverse implementation team is essential.  Ability to work in flexible, fast-paced environment.  Excellent project management skills, detail-oriented.  Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.  Excellent computer skills including AutoCAD or VectorWorks, Excel, Word, and Adobe Suite.  Knowledge of additional languages a plus.  Occasional travel may be required.
