Job Description


Exhibition Technicians work under the supervision of the Director of Exhibition Production to receive, mount, pack and disperse all exhibitions, including loans and works in the Permanent Collection.


  • Minimum of at least two years' experience working in a museum, gallery setting or related environment, handling, caring for, and installing art objects.
  • Must be experienced with and demonstrate safe use of shop equipment including, but not limited to: drills, sawzalls, sanders, electrical, various saws, grinders and routers.
  • Demonstrated competence in standard museum best practices.
  • Ability to work well as a team member, and relate to a wide variety of staff and non-museum personnel.
  • Ability to manage project details, including but no limited to: production schedule, vendors and subcontractors, temporary employees and budgets.
  • Creativity in solving technical problems and flexibility in adapting to unusual circumstances.
  • Bachelor's degree in studio art, art history or media and performing arts preferred.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends when needed.

Essential Functions

  • Safely and carefully handle all objects placed within the Museum's care, whether owned or borrowed.
  • Collaborate with the Registration Department, Curatorial Department, and visiting artists and curators working on Museum projects.
  • Under close supervision by the Director of Exhibition Production, serve as point person to “lead” and coordinate temporary Exhibitions staff during projects when needed.
  • Because the scope of the Museum's exhibition program incorporates conventional art forms as well as those which are more experimental in nature, Exhibition Technicians must perform a wide variety of tasks and functions relating to all aspects of construction, fabrication, and installation and maintenance of exhibitions.

While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent must be able to do the following:

  • Stand for long periods
  • Bend, stoop, reach, lift, and climb to move materials and operate artwork
  • Climb up and down stairs and ladders
  • Reach both above and below shoulder height
  • Be able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Manual dexterity to operate manually-controlled equipment and artwork
  • Ability to visually inspect work; specific visual abilities include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
  • Be comfortable operating equipment such as mechanical lifts and power tools

Desired Skills

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe CS and Sketchup
  • Knowledge of various fabrication techniques and methods
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
