Job Description

Graphic Designer


The Graphic Design department at MOCA operates as the internal design studio supporting the museum’s brand and identity, exhibitions, marketing campaigns, membership, public programs, and education initiatives, as well as all other communications across the museum. Reporting to the Art Director, the Graphic Designer develops concepts and designs for various print, environmental, and digital projects within the Museum. The Graphic Designer will be responsible for taking projects from concept to completion, including procuring estimates, coordinating schedules, and supervising vendors.


To perform this job well, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty with energy and excellence as a goal.

  • BFA in graphic design
  • 3+ years of experience in print and web design
  • Experience in environmental graphic design a plus
  • Impeccable attention to detail
  • Experience in production of printing and color proofing
  • Experience in preparing design for digital media and the web
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent communicator
  • Be proactive
  • Ability to work well under pressure
  • Team player who is willing to collaborate with people across all museum departments
  • A professional level of experience with Adobe Creative Suite
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of HTML and CSS a plus
  • Must have a valid drivers license and access to a car

Essential Functions

  • Demonstrate a high level of creativity, problem-solving ability, and conceptual development through excellent graphic design and typography
  • Work with members of exhibition team, curators, installers and vendors to design, prepare, and install exhibition graphics, such as exhibition identity, title walls, wall texts, graphic murals, photo blow-up reproduction, and object labels
  • Communicates project goals and design planning
  • Connects design solutions with the goals of specific projects
  • Researches subject matter to better understand the context for design
  • Develops several design directions in response to projects
  • Guides the design process to find the best and most practical solutions within schedule and budget constraints
  • Participates in planning meetings
  • Meet with various departments to discuss scope, design, budget, and schedule of projects.
  • Present preliminary designs, comprehensive and complete layouts, and storyboards for review and approval on jobs such as exhibitions, digital assets, video/animations, invitations, brochures, marketing campaigns, signage, and magazines
  • Responds to editing and revision
  • Manages a variety of print production
  • Assists with the development of specifications for vendors
  • Review proofs and make all necessary color correction until final product is delivered that meets or exceeds all required quality standards and objectives.
  • Supervises external vendors for quality control

Physical Demands

While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent must be able to do the following: sit for extended periods; bend and reach for filing and other job-related functions; climb up and down stairs; bend, stoop, and lift to move and retrieve materials; pull, push, and lift; reach both above and below shoulder height. Specific visual abilities include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to visually inspect work. Manual dexterity to operate computer and other office equipment required. Heavy usage of computers and phones required.
