Job Description

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation is seeking a temporary Project Archives Assistant for a three-month assignment. This positon will be needed three days a week. This fixed-term role is an integral part of the Guggenheim Listening project team, responsible for facilitating the digitization of the Reel to Reel collection at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum Archives. This three-month position is made possible by the generous support of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Founded in 1937, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation is dedicated to promoting the understanding and appreciation of art, primarily of the modern and contemporary periods, through exhibitions, education programs, research initiatives, and publications. The Guggenheim network that began in the 1970s when the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, was joined by the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice, has since expanded to include the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (opened 1997) and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi (currently in development). Looking to the future, the Guggenheim Foundation continues to forge international collaborations that take contemporary art, architecture, and design beyond the walls of the museum. Key Responsibilities

  • Create Digital Archival Objects in ArchivesSpace to include descriptive, technical, and preservation metadata.
  • Update and enhance the existing finding aid at item-level in ArchivesSpace, in accordance with DACS.
  • Assist the Digital Asset Manager in creating metadata for all digitized tracks in the Guggenheim’s digital asset management system.
  • Writing blog posts for the Guggenheim’s Findings blog.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Library & Information Studies or Archival Studies from an ALA-accredited university.
  • Knowledge of archives terminology and standards including DACS and EAD.
  • Previous experience processing archives or cataloging audiovisual collections.
  • Great attention to detail, ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, organizational, interpersonal, planning, analytical, and conceptual skills.
  • Knowledge of 20th century art and/or audiovisual recordings and ArchivesSpace a plus.
  • Ability to lift boxes weighing up to 20 pounds.
